What is Abilify?
Abilify is an anxiolytic of the new generation which contains an active ingredient Aripiprazole. This ingredient provides a sedative action and is indicated to reduce acute psychoses or episodes of the anxiety and panic.
A therapeutic action of Abilify is characterized by the partial selective blocking of the receptors of serotonin and dopamine. But in practice, a mixed action happens. Abilify agitates the receptors during the deficit of neurotransmitters (serotonin and dopamine) and blocks their production during the surplus of the neurotransmitters. This product does not bind to the histamine receptors, and therefore the use of Abilify seldom causes severe sleepiness or other sedative side effects.
An important positive function of Abilify is its ability to reduce the interval of QT of electrocardiogram, and it may mean a higher cardiovascular safety of the treatment with this drug.
Who should take Abilify?
Abilify is used by patients with high anxiety and acute panic disorders:
- Manic episodes
- Bipolar disorder
- Major depressive disorder (as part of combination therapy)
How to take Abilify?
If you are prescribed Abilify, you should know that besides positive therapeutic characteristics, this medicine may cause side effects during the incorrect application. Therefore, it is necessary to attentively read the instruction and do not exceed the daily dose.
A dosing regimen of Abilify is individual. A type of the mental disorder and its severity, duration of the symptoms, patient’s age and sensitivity to Aripiprazole are taken into account.
A standard scheme of the treatment of schizophrenia suggests the use of Abilify 10-15 mg once per day, at any time. If a medical image is not improved within 2 weeks, a dose may be increased up to 30 mg but not more.
If maniac episodes or bipolar disorders, Abilify is used in the dose of 15 mg per day. A dose may beincreasedin 48 hours. The maximal dose of Abilify is 30 mg per day regardless of the type of the mental disorder.
If Abilify is used in the combined therapy, a dose should not exceed 15 mg per day (or if your doctor recommended you other doses).
What are the side effects?
A tendency to suicidal thoughts is peculiar for patients with psychoses. Abilify does not increase a risk of these thoughts but it is necessary to control a patient within 15 days after the moment of the started treatment.
Abilify may cause systemic side effects related to the activity of the central nervous system and cardiovascular system: sleep disturbance, nervousness, increased salivation, muscle twitching, low mental alertness, tachycardia, lowering blood pressure, nausea, and loss of appetite.
The side effects may be controlled, and therefore if a patient experiences a severe psychological or physiological discomfort, a dose of Abilify should be reduced. The side effects may grow during the overdose, and therefore do not take more than 30 mg of Abilify per day.
