Main information about Cipro
Ciprois a brand name of the antimicrobial ciprofloxacin used to treat infections in the medical practice.
Cipro is a medicine from the group of fluoroquinolones of 2 generation. The antibiotics of this group have been allowed for the use at the beginning of 80th of XX century and have differential characteristics. Cipro antibiotic differs by a broad antimicrobial action (including staphylococci), high bactericidal activity and a good pharmacokinetics. This antibiotic can be used during infections of any severity and any site.
Cipro has a great volume of distribution after the absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract. Its active ingredients create high concentration in the organs and tissues, penetrate inside cells. Having a peak concentration in the cells of the body, ciprofloxacin provides a bactericidal effect as to pathogenic microflora. It blocks two important enzymes of the microbial cell: DNA-gyrase and topoisomerase IV. As a result of the inhibition of these enzymes, bacteria stop dividing and cannot maintain the development of the infectious process.
The therapeutic activity of Cipro is broad. This antibiotic may be used during different infectious processes in:
- digestive tract
- pelvic
- urinary organs
- respiratory tract (upper and lower)
- upper respiratory tract
Cipro may be also used during purulent infections of the skin, soft tissues, sexually-transmitted infections and meningitis. A doctor will have a correct diagnosis and prescribe an antibacterial course during detecting of the medical image and type of infection.
Use and dose of Cipro
Cipro pills are taken orally with enough water. Swallow the pills entirely and do not break their cover. Food does not influence on the bioavailability of ciprofloxacin and its pharmacological characteristics, and therefore the pills can be used regardless of meals. To treat infections of the middle severity, patients are prescribed a pill of Cipro 250 mg 2 times per day.
To treat severe infections (including infections of kidneys and urinary tracts), it is recommended to increase the daily dose and take Cipro 500 mg 2-3 times per day.

- be careful during the use of Cipro, if you have severe vascular diseases: disorder of the cerebral circulation, atherosclerosis
- in case of the organic diseases of the brain, epilepsy, mental disorders, a risk of the side effects grows in the central nervous system. During these pathologies, Cipro is prescribed only during special cases
- Cipro may be used by adult patients over 18 years old after a complete formation of the bony skeleton
- Before using Cipro, make sure than you are not pregnant. Do not take this drug during pregnancy
Side effects
The side effects are peculiar for all fluoroquinolones including Cipro: heartburn, loss of appetite, stomachache, nausea/vomiting, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, convulsions, and allergic skin reactions.
The intensity of the side effects depends on the properly used dose. So, before beginning the treatment, make sure that you do not have contraindications for the use and have a discussion of a daily dose with your physician.
